Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has announced the re-opening of public and private schools following six months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Prof. Magoha said the progressive re-opening will begin with students in Grade 4, Class Eight and Form Four who are expected back to school from Monday, October 12.
“Pursuant to the Presidential Directive issued during the Twelfth (12th) Presidential Address to the Nation on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Monday, 28th September, 2020, and following broad-based education stakeholder consultations; the Ministry of Education notifies the public that the progressive re-opening of schools will commence with Grade 4 (Competency Based Curriculum Class), Class 8 and Form 4 on Monday, 12th October, 2020,” reads the statement.
Class Eight and Form Four students will sit their KCPE and KCSE exams in March 2021.
According to an exam calendar released by the Ministry of Education, the KCPE exam will be conducted for three days between March 22-March 24, 2021 while the Form Four candidates are set to write their KCSE test from March 25- April 16, 2021.
The students returning to school on Monday will continue with learning until December 23, 2020, when the second term will come to an end before proceeding for a one-week Christmas break.
As the students return to class, the Ministry has instructed all schools to ensure mandatory use of face masks, monitoring of the body temperature for all learners, staff and all other persons accessing the schools, handwashing and observance of high levels of hygiene.
Where there is no running water, schools have been advised to ensure sanizers are available.
Regarding social distancing, the Education CS says: “Although physical distancing will remain a challenge, it should not be used as a bottleneck to keep any child away from school.”
All schools that had been used as quarantine centres, according to the Ministry, have been fumigated under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in readiness for re-opening
